Job Description

The Recreational Therapist works independently and as part of the inter-professional health care team and is responsible for the development, coordination and implementation of recreation therapy and leisure counseling. The main duty of the Recreational Therapist is to assess, plan, implement, coordinate and evaluate a variety of program activities, achieving optimal care for the patient prior to admission, while in the program and following discharge. Must be able to collaborate with other disciplines to provide all services.

 

 

What must you have? 

  • Degree from a recognized Recreation or Social/Health Science program
  • Member in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO)
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.

 

What else do you bring? 

  • 1 to 3 years of recent clinical experience in recreation and leisure counseling
  • Experience in planning and program delivery for groups and individuals on Alternate Level of Care (ALC), Complex care, rehabilitation unit, and palliative care unit.
  • Recent experience in volunteer programs and/or working with volunteers
  • Understanding of recreation therapy methodologies, principles and practice for palliative care patients.
  • Maintains membership in professional job related organizations as related to area of expertise and knowledge of current trends, such as Therapeutic Recreation Ontario, (TR0), Activity Professionals of Ontario and Ontario Gerentological Association.
  • Continually seeking ongoing education.
  • Actively contributes and participates in hospital and external activities, e.g. projects, task forces, workload measurement audits, staffing, education and orientation of students and staff
  • Computer literacy in a Windows environment utilizing Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. 
  • Proven attendance record.
  • Demonstrates understanding and complies with patient and staff safety policies and procedures that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Effectively uses empathy in interactions with others and demonstrates behaviors consistent with Mackenzie Health’s Commitment to Caring.
  • Models behavior that is aligned with the values of Mackenzie Health – Excellence, Leadership and Empathy.
  • Commitment to providing an exceptional experience for staff and clients within a challenging and exciting health care environment.

 

 Preferably, your profile also includes:

  • Post graduate diploma in Gerontology
  • Certificate in Palliative Care
  • Recent experience in working with Palliative care patients
  • Gerontology focus with expertise in rehabilitation, reactivation restoration and leisure counseling
