Job Description

As a member of the Pharmacy Leadership Team, the Pharmacy Compounding Coordinator at Mackenzie Health will be the primary resource to ensure organizational compliance with OCP/NAPRA sterile and non-sterile compounding (hazardous and non-hazardous) requirements.   This position will share their time across both sites of Mackenzie Health including supporting the Chemotherapy Pharmacy.

 

Contribute to safe, quality care by

 

  • Provide oversight of the preparation and verification of sterile and non-sterile (hazardous and non-hazardous) compounds
  • Provide oversight of the preparation and verification of sterile and non-sterile (hazardous and non-hazardous) compounding records
  • Ensure risk assessments are completed and maintained
  • Ensure policies and procedures related to compliance with OCP/NAPRA sterile and non-sterile compounding (hazardous and non-hazardous) are developed, regularly reviewed, updated (at least every 3 years or more frequently when standards have changed) and adhered to
  • Develop and maintain training, assessment and certification programs for compounding personnel
  • Develop and maintain training, assessment and certification programs for cleaning staff 
  • Implement and maintain a robust compounding quality assurance program to ensure compliance with OCP/NAPRA compounding, cleaning and medication safety standards
  • Prevention measures are implemented, in collaboration with the pharmacy leadership, to limit exposure of personnel to hazardous products
  • Ensures facilities and equipment used to compound hazardous and non-hazardous sterile preparations meet requirements and are maintained, calibrated or certified according to manufacturers’ specifications or standards, whichever are more stringent
  • Develops and maintains a quality assurance program, designed to ensure that preparation activities are performed in accordance with standards of practice, scientific standards, existing data and relevant information
  • Provide oversight of automated compounding preparation and workflow technologies
  • In collaboration with the Pharmacy Manager(s), oversee the operations of the Parenteral Admixture program
  • Liaise with external vendors and resources to ensure equipment and environment requirements are aligned to the OCP/NAPRA certification standards
  • Maintain all documentation and logs required for monitoring and compliance in accordance with OCP/NAPRA
  • Support learning plans and performance management for staff as required to maintain compliance with OCP/NAPRA
  • Serving as member of pharmacy leadership team
  • Sharing in departmental leadership on-call responsibilities 

 

What must you have?

 

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician, in good standing with the Ontario College of Pharmacists (Part A)
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in an acute care hospital setting

Preferably, your profile also includes:

 

  • Proven understanding of OCP/NAPRA model standards for sterile and non-sterile (hazardous and non-hazardous) compounding
  • Sound knowledge of Accreditation Canada and Institute of Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) standards preferred
  • Sound knowledge of compounding technologies preferred
  • Previous experience supervising NAPRA compounding standards preferred
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in a formal leadership role
