Job Description

Working in close collaboration with other members of the management team across Mackenzie Health, the Manager, Pharmacy Services - MRHH is responsible for the oversight of efficient, safe and high-quality medication management services, in alignment with the organization’s Medication Management Framework.   They will ensure that these services reflect evidence- based, outcome-oriented best practices in compliance with safe medication practices, applicable legislation, Ontario College of Pharmacists standards and Accreditation Canada standards.   
 
The Manager, Pharmacy Services - MRHH has oversight of all pharmacy staff at the Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital and Reactivation Care Centre (Mackenzie Health).   They are responsible for managerial oversight of pharmacy automation as well as all aspects of medication management, including both distribution and clinical services.   The Manager, Pharmacy Services – MRHH works closely with the Manager, Pharmacy Services – CVH site to optimize standardization of medication management services across the organization.   
 
The role includes, but is not limited to, managing and overseeing daily operations, department communications, human resource management, operational excellence and quality improvement, orientation, training and staff development, budget development, utilization management, risk management and policy and procedure development and implementation.   The activities of this individual must facilitate the integration of systematic change that positively impacts the provision of quality patient care.
 
 
Contribute to safe, quality care by:
  • Promote and develop a leading edge, safe, effective and efficient medication management system in accordance with the Mackenzie Health Medication Management Framework
  • Strive for standardization of medication management practices across all sites of Mackenzie Health
  • Manage the staffing, recruitment, development and performance of all pharmacy staff at the MRHH and RCC sites
  • Influence and motivate staff through transformational leadership and encourage effective relationships among the interprofessional teams
  • Take responsibility for medication management quality improvement initiatives and risk reduction strategies in conjunction with other managers
  • Develop, implement and review evidence-based treatment protocols/guidelines 
  • Implement and maintain pharmacy automation and other equipment relevant to medication management
  • Oversee procurement of medications and management of medication backorders and drug shortages
  • Investigates and addresses issues identified through medication-related safety incident reports
  • Participates in quality improvement and workload measurement activities by conducting audits, tracking indicators and workload statistics and benchmarking 
  • Achieve benchmark quality, operational and utilization performance targets 
  • Develop, manage, monitor, and review financial performance of the pharmacy department
  • Serve as part of the Pharmacy Leadership Team “on-call”
  • Adheres to Occupational Health & Safety responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Performs workplace inspections and investigations, remedies issues and provides training/information to workers
 
What must you have?
  • Registered Pharmacist, in good standing with the Ontario College of Pharmacists (Part A)
  • PharmD or Masters preparation, an asset
  • Post-graduate Pharmacy Residency Program (ACPR), preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in an acute care hospital pharmacy 
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of recent progressive pharmacy leadership experience 
 
What else do you bring?
  • Knowledge of current evidence-based best practice pharmacotherapeutics and pharmacokinetics and their application to patient-centered pharmaceutical care
  • Knowledge of NAPRA, Ontario College of Pharmacists Standards and Accreditation Canada Standards 
  • General knowledge of disease states, appropriate dosages, delivery techniques, formulations, routes of administration of all medications, interpretation of laboratory and clinical parameters and their application to patient assessment and monitoring
  • Utilization of effective teaching, presentation, documentation & communication practices
  • Understanding and interpretation of research methodology and outcomes & critical appraisal of study design
  • Knowledge of health system technologies, distribution systems and their application
  • Knowledge of aseptic technique & extemporaneous preparation of pharmaceuticals 
  • Knowledge of safe handling, acquisition, distribution & disposal of hazardous drug products
  • Knowledge and utilization of credible medical information resources 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft applications
  • Excellent written /oral communication skills. 
  • Ability to work well under pressure and on concurrent multidisciplinary projects
  • Good organizational skills including project management and maintenance of records
